How to avoid Purgatory / The Pathway to Victory
Purgatory exists as an extension of God's great Mercy for us. At the time of death, some souls, through their own fault, may deserve to enter hell. Yet, it's possible that they can still be saved (even at that very last possible moment) by a sudden act of sincere repentance in union with an act of Divine Mercy. Although they may have been saved from hell, their soul still needs to be purified before entering into the Presence of the Almighty and Perfect God.
The mystery God leaves us is this---that we do not know who is saved, who goes to Purgatory, and who goes straight to Heaven. It's a mistake to assume that all of our loved ones go straight to Heaven in their passing. What if they strived hard to love Jesus, but they just couldn't stand a certain neighbor or co-worker, or maybe they held a long-term resentment and unforgiveness in their heart toward an old aquaintance? Should they go straight to Heaven---even though their love was imperfect while they were still on earth? Yet, they loved Jesus, so they shouldn't go to hell. Therefore, the God of perfect order, in His Divine Mercy, allows them to enter a place of purification so that the imperfect can be made perfect, as precious metal is refined in fire.
"Be you therefore perfect, as also your heavenly Father is perfect." Matthew 5:48
Over the centuries, God has allowed some of those who are being purified in Purgatory to appear to certain saints and others here on earth in order to teach us all about the reality of their sufferings and to ask for their help. Many souls from Purgatory would often visit Padre Pio to ask him to pray and offer Masses for them.
The souls in Purgatory cannot help themselves. They are dependent upon our prayers and sacrifices. Of greatest assistance, is when we have a Mass offered for them (the Offering of the Sacrificial Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ--which can be done by anyone, at any local Catholic Church. You do not have to be a Catholic in order to have a Mass offered for a loved one.) Also of greatest relief to the poor souls detained in Purgatory is to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy or the Rosary, or to offer other personal prayers and sacrifices on their behalf.
From many apparitions throughout history, the poor souls have revealed to us that there are different levels of Purgatory---including that which is closest to hell, and that which is just shy of entering into Heaven. It's a place of immense suffering, and for the sake of our loved ones, we would be wise to educate ourselves about the truth of Purgatory. Once we understand this reality, the more we will be able to help those who suffer there. If we just "assume" everyone goes straight to Heaven when they die, we do a great disservice to the poor souls who are in such need of our assistance.
The following stories document some of the teachings about Purgatory from apparitions over the centuries. As we read about what these poor souls have revealed to us, let us remember that no matter how difficult life may seem to us here on earth, we still have the opportunity each day to offer our prayers, sufferings and sacrifices (our Crosses) to appease the Divine Justice of those already in Purgatory, and to repair for our own sins, as well---thus, lessening our need for a long Purgatory. In a sense, we can "do our Purgatory now" by little acts of Holy Love toward one another---such as, by praying for the souls in Purgatory, and by accepting God's Will over our own throughout the day. Each day is an opportunity for us in this regard---in fact, it holds many opportunities to help ourselves and the suffering souls in Purgatory (which could include some of our own ancestors and departed friends).

When the Virgin Mary appeared to the Fatima children on 5/13/1917, the
children asked her about a young 18-20 year old girl by the name of Amelia,
who had recently died. Our Lady replied:
"She will be in Purgatory....until the end of the world.
It is very humbling for us to consider that a girl so young should receive such a harsh punishment in Purgatory.

Jesus gave St. Faustina the following message about those who suffer in Purgatory. (This insight is part of the Novena that proceeds the Feast of Divine Mercy-Day 8).
#1226 - "Today bring to Me the souls who are in the prison of Purgatory, and immerse them in the abyss of My Mercy. Let the torrents of My Blood cool down their scorching flames. All these souls are greatly loved by Me. They are making retribution to My Justice. It is in your power to bring them relief. Draw all the indulgences from the treasury of My Church and offer them on their behalf. Oh, if you only knew the torments they suffer, you would continually offer for them the alms of the spirit and pay off their debt to My Justice."

Regarding the various levels of Purgatory
From the Book: "Purgatory--Explained by the Lives and Legends of the Saints" - by Father F. X. Schouppe, S. J. From the experiences of St. Lidwina who died in 1433.
Pgs. 23-24 "....An unfortunate sinner, entangled in the corruptions of the world, was finally converted. Thanks to the prayers and urgent exhortations of Lidwina he made a sincere confession of all his sins and received absolution, but had little time to practice penance, for shortly after, he died of the plague."
"The saint offered up many prayers and sufferings for his soul; and some time afterwards, having been taken by her angel guardian into Purgatory, she desired to know if he was still there and in what condition. 'He is there,' said her angel, 'and he suffers much. Would you be willing to endure some pain in order to diminish his?' 'Certainly,' she replied, 'I am ready to suffer anything to assist him.' Instantly her angel conducted her into a place of frightful torture. 'Is this, then, Hell, my brother?' asked the holy maiden seized with horror. 'No sister...but this part of Purgatory is bordering upon Hell.' Looking around on all sides, she saw what resembled an immense prison, surrounded with walls of a prodigious height, the blackness of which, together with the monstrous stones, inspired her with horror. Approaching this dismal enclosure, she heard a confused noise of lamenting voices, cries of fury, chains, instruments of torture, violent blows which the executioners discharged upon their victims...."
" '....Do you recognize that voice?' said the angel to her. 'Alas! yes,' answered the servant of God. 'Do you desire to see that soul?'...he called him by his name; and immediately (she) saw appear at the mouth of the pit a spirit all on fire, resembling incandescent metal, which said to her in a voice scarcely audible, 'O Lidwina, servant of God, who will give me to contemplate the face of the Most High?' " (He was begging her for her prayers that he may ascend from the pit to behold the face of God.) A few days later, the angel of the man she saw and prayed for in Purgatory appeared to St. Lidwina to inform her that he "had left the pit and passed into the ordinary Purgatory."

(A soul from Purgatory) "I am here by God's great mercy...for my excessive pride had brought me to the gates of hell. I influenced a great number of other people, and now I would gladly throw myself at the feet of the most abject pauper. Have compassion on me and do acts of humility to make reparation for my pride, thus you will be able to deliver me from this abyss......"
....A priest in Purgatory said to Josefa: "How great is the Mercy of God, when He deigns to make use of the sufferings of other souls to repair our infidelities...."
"....Offer the Blood of Christ for us," said another who was just about to leave Purgatory. "What would become of us, if there were no one to help us?".....

HOLY LOVE MESSAGES REGARDING PURGATORY
5/26/07 "I am Alanus. Jesus sends me to relate to you some knowledge of Purgatory. All praise be to Jesus."
"The soul, once freed from the body, undergoes its final judgment. This judgment is based on the depth of Holy Love in the heart at the last breath. It is this decision to live in Holy Love or not, that the soul makes throughout his life, which determines his particular place in Heaven, Purgatory or Hell. If the soul consistently chooses Holy and Divine Love, he would have a particularly high place in Heaven. If the soul tried to live in Holy Love, but had faults in Holy Love he was unable to conquer, then he would find himself in Purgatory. So you see, it is each person who chooses his own afterlife according to free will."
"As you know, Purgatory has many levels. The deepest level--the one farthest from God--is reserved for those souls who converted at the last moment of life or for those who had repented of grave sins, but had never atoned for them. The greatest trial in all of Purgatory is being apart from God. These souls, in the deepest part of Purgatory, feel this loss most keenly because they are the farthest from God. So you see, the depth of love in your heart in this life affects you throughout eternity. Each soul's eternal reward is based on the Holy Love in his heart throughout his lifetime. I will take you to the edge of Purgatory soon."

5/28/07 - Alanus (the visionary's angel) comes to me. He says: "All praise be to Jesus. Today in your country the citizens commemorate the dead by visiting cemeteries and decorating grave sites with flags, flowers and so forth. But what I have come to show you should change the outlook of all people concerning the hereafter if they enter into this vision of Purgatory with sincere hearts."
He then leads me, mystically, along a path which seems to be covered in brambles. We go up a little incline and he asks me to stand beside him on the edge of a rocky cliff. He motions with a sweep of his arm, and below us is a big canyon. At one end are great flames. It looks like people in silhouettes bobbing up and down in these flames. There are loud cries for mercy and shouts of pain, but it does not alleviate the suffering.
Alanus says, "These are the souls in greatest need of prayer and sacrifice. This is the lowest part of Purgatory--the part closest to Hell itself. Many suffer here, for no one prays for them. They were regarded as 'good'--some even 'holy'--in their lifetime, but it was all a facade. Many priests are among these poor souls, for they were not faithful to the precepts of the Church."
"There are those who lied about others, and destroyed their reputations. These are them." He shows me souls who are having molten lead poured down their throats. It burns holes through their necks but does not stop. On a ledge around this fire are many angels--more than I can count. Alanus says, "These are the guardian angels of those poor souls being purified at this level. Through all of this suffering, the souls' greatest trial is separation from God."
I saw souls who seemed to have their flesh melting away. This, too, was unending. Alanus said, "These are the ones who were guilty of sins of the flesh."
We moved on to view the next level. There seemed to be something like water poured down on the fire so the flames were smaller--not as intense. Alanus said, "Blood and water from the Side of Jesus continually flows upon the souls on this level." The souls were suffering, but all their suffering seemed more alike, and for some reason, the souls seemed more united. They had their hands raised towards an opening. They seemed to be begging for mercy. Alanus told me, "They suffer intensely for not being in God's Presence."
We moved on to what seemed like a much better area. These souls looked more like people, but they were gray. Alanus said, "These are the ones closest to Paradise. They are almost completely purified. They need maybe one Mass, or one rosary; maybe one Hail Mary to enter eternal joy."
"So you see, decorating graves is not what souls, long deceased, cry out for. Many spend long centuries in Purgatory, for their loved ones think they are in Heaven. If you pray and sacrifice for these holy souls, they will assist you now and at the hour of your death. Make it known."

10/22/10 - (A Poor Soul) "All praise be to Jesus - Glory to Mary, Queen and Mother. I come as I have been sent - to dictate to you messages about Purgatory. Do not reject this grace."
(The visionary, Maureen: I see an old woman in charred clothing and I smell smoke. She has appeared many times before but has never spoken - so I ignored her.)
Poor Soul: "Purgatory should not be feared, daughter, but seen as a grace. But at the same time, souls should do all in their power to avoid imprisonment here. This is a place of reparation for sins that are forgiven but not atoned for. At the same time, it is a place of preparation for entrance to eternal joy. Here, the soul is perfected if he has not been perfected in the world. The soul is made beautiful in the Eyes of God."
"Because this is a place which prepares the soul to be in God's Presence, it is also a place of separation from God, and this is the greatest suffering of all. The soul, at his last judgment, is in God's Presence, and even temporary separation from this Perfect, Eternal Love is agonizing."
"The prayer that moves the souls most rapidly through Purgatory is the Holy Mass; next is the Holy Rosary. No one needs to believe in Purgatory to be assigned there. Purgatory is a reality - does exist - and disbelief is not an avoidance of this place of reparation. Disbelief, however, if it is dictated by your tenets of faith, can be a reason for a longer stay. I will speak soon about various crimes that lead a soul into Purgatory."

10/23/10 - (A Poor Soul) (This is the same poor soul that appeared with Jesus yesterday.) The poor soul says: "Praise be to Jesus. There are basically three forms of suffering in the regions of Purgatory. One is physical, and can be as intense as the fires of Hell. That is the lowest region. Along with this physical fire is the feeling of extreme desolation or loneliness. As the soul moves to the next level, he does not suffer so much physically as he suffers this emotional abandonment, and along with it, the spiritual suffering of being separated from God. The level of Purgatory closest to Heaven is the region where the only suffering is the longing to be united with The Eternal Now - The Eternal Good. This longing is intense."
"The souls in Purgatory suffer also from not being aware of the passage of time or how long they will be where they are. When they are prayed for or sacrifices are offered for them, their sufferings are somewhat relieved, and they are allowed some insight as to their tenure in any one circumstance. This is why prayer and sacrifice are so important to us - the poor souls."
Note: Later this evening Our Lady visited Maureen and said: "You're asking about the name of the poor soul who visits; her name is Rachel."

10/24/10 (Rachel) - "Please understand that no sacrifice, no matter how small, if offered with love for the souls in Purgatory, is unworthy. These souls await the smallest prayer - the most seemingly insignificant sacrifice which, given with love - renders relief and consolation. I pass this information on to you as a grace for the relief of many. Those who practice charity towards us - the poor souls - will find their own Purgatory mitigated."

11/2/11 - Rachel says: "Praise be to Jesus. You know me as Rachel. When I was in Purgatory, I was greatly helped by your prayers and the prayers of those you informed about me. I have been allowed to return to you today to plead the cause of so many millions still in the bowels of Purgatory that no one prays for."
"You can never offer too many prayers for the poor souls. Purgatory is densely populated. The greatest suffering of these souls is to be separated from the Trinity Whom they now realize to be the One Most Worthy of their affection and ardor. It is much like being in prison, longing to go home, but unable to do so."
"The poor souls, whose release you acquire, are ever grateful and pray for your intentions without ceasing. So, you see, we are good friends, both in life and in death. Though the benefits of your generosity towards the poor souls is most often unrecognizable, I tell you, these fruits are all around you. Learn to call upon the suffering souls and souls you assisted in being delivered from Purgatory, as you would your guardian angel."
"These souls can help expedite situations ensnared by Satan's confusion. They can bring the light of truth into darkness. They can encourage in righteousness those tempted to sin. In short, such souls are strong intercessors between Heaven and earth. Once again, I come to thank all who prayed for me. Please know I am your Rachel - your intercessor before the Throne of God."

4/5/07 - (Jesus) "And the tongue--so capable of good, yet so prone to evil. Did you know that there are those in Heaven who committed abortions and repented, while there are many who will be in Purgatory until the end of time if they are fortunate? Why? They killed the innocent people I put in their lives with their tongues. Those given over to a life of sin but repent in the end will find My judgment easier on them than those who calumnize and never repent."
Holy Love Apparition - 7/19/99 - Jesus: "Take for instance one Hail Mary. If it is recited with a loving heart it brings with it the power to convert a soul, to stop a war, to deliver a soul from purgatory, even to change the future of the world. See then that the love in your heart when you pray determines the power of the prayer."

"If there is only one thing - one fruit - of my visits to you, I would want it to be this -- the knowledge that every thought, word and action is liable to God's Judgment, and deserving of His Mercy. Souls need to do more than recognize their faults and failings. They must - with their free will - act to overcome them. It is this failure to seek perfection in the Eyes of God that sends countless numbers to the confines of Purgatory."
"Jesus desires that the following prayer be propagated:"
"Dear Jesus, grant me the grace of self-knowledge so that by looking
into my own heart with humility, I will discover my weaknesses in Holy Love.
Then give me the grace of courage to try to overcome my faults so that I will
not have to be purified of them in Purgatory. Amen."

10/27/10 (Rachel, Previously A Poor Soul) -Rachel comes and she's all in white. She looks radiant. She says: "Praise be to Jesus."
"Please allow me to thank the people who prayed me into Heaven. I was in Purgatory many years for the sin of not examining the errors in my own heart, and not trying to correct them. There are thousands, even millions, still imprisoned there for the same reason. They, like me, were given the grace to recognize their errors but did not take the call to conversion to heart. Their words and actions led to the loss of many souls. Please let the people know that examination of conscience is very important. Thank you!"

"My brothers and sisters, whenever possible turn your hearts lovingly to prayer in the present moment. This will lead you closer to Divine Love. There are many souls in Purgatory today who wish they could say one more Hail Mary in front of the tabernacle, and promptly be delivered into Heaven by so doing."

H.L. - 5/5/07 Jesus: "You must realize that the Eternal Father created time for the specific reason of each soul's salvation. Therefore, understanding this, realize your existence in this life is the opportunity for each soul to work out his salvation--his eyes fixed on Heaven."
"I sent My Mother to your midst as 'Refuge of Holy Love' so that She could lovingly purge you of your greatest faults and lead you to Me. I come to you as Divine Love to lead you to the Heart of My Father and His Divine Will. Understand that you are now existing in an extended period of grace and mercy, which will have to expire before Justice prevails and My Victory arrives."
"Do not waste these precious moments of time that My Father has allotted you. See that your own personal holiness in the present moment must be your priority. No wealth or power or reputation will follow you into eternity. Leave the love of these things behind, and embrace the truth of Holy and Divine Love."
"Do not be mistaken in believing a lofty title, a big bank account or influential friends will earn you Heaven. Love of these things will only earn you a long stay in Purgatory, at best. Whether or not you believe in Purgatory or Hell does not determine its reality. Your exposure to truth--the truths of the Faith, of Holy and Divine Love and your acceptance or rejection of these truths--will bear witness to your judgment. It is not I who will condemn the liberal or save the one who lives in truth, but the soul himself who decides against good or evil."
"It is always the same vice that leads you away from living in the truth--that of inordinate self-love. That same self-love comes clothed in many forms--ambition, intellectual pride, sensuousness, vanity, power and many more; but it is under these guises Satan appeals to disordered self-love."
"I come once again today to call you back to the truth and to the reality of your existence in time--not to make the most of this life, but to make the most of the next, earning for yourself the highest of Heavens--immersion in My Father's Divine Will--the Sixth Chamber. 10/23/10 - (A Poor Soul) - (Jesus comes with the poor soul that was here yesterday.) He says: "I am your Jesus, born Incarnate. The reason this soul is coming here and relaying messages about Purgatory is to help souls in the world today to realize that the free will choices they make in every present moment affect their eternity. If souls would understand this in their hearts, there would be no personal agendas contrary to My Father's Divine Will."
(Now Jesus leaves and the poor soul begins to speak.) She says: "Praise be to Jesus. Daughter, every soul in Purgatory is there due to imperfections in Holy Love. This is because it is flaws in Holy Love that result in every sin - from the small sin of impatience to murder or sins of the flesh. The more the heart resembles Holy Love at his judgment, the shorter his stay in Purgatory."
"Many, many are here simply because they tried to please themselves or man rather than God. They suffer desolation. Depending upon their crimes against Holy Love, they are assigned to a certain level of reparation in Purgatory. Poor souls can no longer help themselves. They cannot advance to a more comfortable level by themselves, nor can they shorten their time. They are completely dependent upon the Church Militant - on their good will."
"Sins of the flesh and sins of the tongue have their own unique levels of reparation. More souls are in Purgatory today for detraction and calumny than any other crime. If you know someone that has fallen in such a way, pray for his conversion. I will continue to come to you as long as it is God's Will."
****PARTICIPATE IN DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY, AND ITS 9-DAY PREPARATION:
Once a year, on Divine Mercy Sunday, we have a great opportunity, through the Mercy of Christ, to obtain pardon for the punishment we deserve due to our sins. Jesus gave great promises to us through St. Faustina as an invitation to obtain complete forgiveness of sins and the punishment due to us for our sins. Although it involves Catholic Sacraments, non-Catholics should participate in this great devotion as much as possible, with all sincerity of heart. Jesus promised:
#699 "...I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender Mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My Mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My Mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity.....The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy."
#1109 "...I want to grant a complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My Mercy..."
Preparations for Divine Mercy Sunday (the 1st Sunday after Easter) involves praying for different groups of people for 9 days before the Feast of Divine Mercy. (The Novena begins on Good Friday.) Our prayers are an "Act of Mercy" for all of those we pray for during the Novena. Jesus uses our prayers to have Mercy on them, and He also has Mercy on us.
Instructions for the Novena and the Divine Mercy Sunday preparations can be found in the Diary of St. Faustina "Divine Mercy in My Soul," as mentioned on the home page. ---- We must also remember that the 3:00 Divine Mercy Devotion is very powerful in obtaining Mercy.

HEAVEN
5/20/07 - The visionary visited Heaven - "I am your Angel--Alanus. I come in praise of Jesus. Jesus desires that I take you to the edge of eternity so that you can witness with accuracy all that lies in the next world for souls."
All at once, mystically, I seemed to be standing on the edge of Paradise. The angel said, "See, it is all peace here for every heart in pure love. You don't need to think about sin in this moment or the next. There is no sin. There is no present or moments ahead. Everything is all one in the Eternal Now."
It seemed I was seeing colors I never knew existed--beautiful blends of color in great richness. Alanus then said, "Any flower you wish to smell--just think of it and you will smell it. (I thought of sweet peas.) Any food you desire, the desire will be fulfilled without eating. When you think of Jesus, He will be next to you; the same with the Holy Virgin. There is no space here--everything is everywhere--a concept the soul cannot grasp in the world. If you praise God once, the praise resonates throughout Heaven for all eternity. Return and tell everyone what you saw and experienced."

5/21/07 - "I (Alanus) have returned. Praise be to Jesus. The Lord sends me, as He desires that you better understand Heaven. Remember, there is no time or space in Heaven. This is a difficult concept for you, I know. This can best be defined as this--there is no past, present or future in Heaven. All of these come together in the Eternal Now. All is embraced and part of the Divine Will of the Eternal Father Who is the Author of All Good."
"The Heart of God the Father is Heaven itself. No one enters outside of His Adorable Divine Will, for in Heaven all is conformed to His Will. So you see, Heaven is the perfection of the Divine Will. The ways that the soul opposes the Eternal Will of God are faults, imperfections and sins that must be atoned for, and burned away before he can enter Paradise."
"In Heaven there is no duplicity, no criticism, no gossip, no impurity. There is only Divine Love. Therefore, the soul should prepare for Heaven by trying to overcome all his faults while on earth. Further, because there is no space, everything comes together in the Eternal Now. The soul is filled at all times to the brim with all the merits and happiness he earned while on pilgrimage in the world...."

5/21/07 - Jesus: "My brothers and sisters, Alanus {angel} has imparted to you some knowledge of Heaven itself. Do not be overwhelmed with trying to understand every nuance of the message. Just in this present moment, try to live in Holy Love, which is God's Will, and you will find fast entrance into Paradise. Every present moment given over to God's Divine Will is a victory for you and for Me...."

5/14/07 - "I am your Jesus, born Incarnate. Today I tell you in truth, that before time began, the Eternal Now created every future moment for each soul yet to come into existence. He made each moment with its victories and crosses. According to free will, the soul could and can choose salvation or perdition. Each victory He created within the shadow of the Cross. Every cross stands in the light of victory."
"Each present moment is the special design of the Eternal Father, just as each soul is His design. No two present moments are the same--not for any one soul or for all. Yet, in the wisdom and omnipotence of the Eternal Now, each soul receives all he needs to become a saint."

11/8/04 - "I am your Jesus, born Incarnate. I have come to dictate to you the first of many messages on holy littleness of heart. It is such as these that reach the Kingdom of Heaven before all others, for these are the childlike souls who most resemble the Divine Will of My Father."
"....The spiritually little are the ones who are self-effaced. They place God and others first. In this way they take Holy Love a step farther, for they love their neighbor more than self. The spiritually little take delight in little things, such as the Hand of God in nature, the gift of life from Heaven, the very conveniences God provides for them."
"Such souls are not intent on their own way or on their own opinions. They desire only what God chooses for them. The spiritually little never seek out recognition, acclaim or prestige in the eyes of man. These souls recognize that the only opinion of value is God's opinion of them. Souls such as these desire hiddenness. Their spirituality is clothed in the hidden life they share only with Me. The ones who try to appear holy in the eyes of others have not discovered genuine holiness. The truly holy little one never announces the graces he receives from Heaven. He always desires others be considered more holy than himself.---No one can attain sanctity outside of spiritual littleness. Begin to make this known."

We may not see such signs whenever we pray, and to be honest, we really shouldn't base our faith on "looking for signs" in order to believe, but we must know that every prayer effort and every commitment to humbly serve our Lord God in Truth is very pleasing to Him. The blessings He bestows are abundant, and we may not see their fruits until we stand before Him on our last day.

The mystery God leaves us is this---that we do not know who is saved, who goes to Purgatory, and who goes straight to Heaven. It's a mistake to assume that all of our loved ones go straight to Heaven in their passing. What if they strived hard to love Jesus, but they just couldn't stand a certain neighbor or co-worker, or maybe they held a long-term resentment and unforgiveness in their heart toward an old aquaintance? Should they go straight to Heaven---even though their love was imperfect while they were still on earth? Yet, they loved Jesus, so they shouldn't go to hell. Therefore, the God of perfect order, in His Divine Mercy, allows them to enter a place of purification so that the imperfect can be made perfect, as precious metal is refined in fire.
"Be you therefore perfect, as also your heavenly Father is perfect." Matthew 5:48
Over the centuries, God has allowed some of those who are being purified in Purgatory to appear to certain saints and others here on earth in order to teach us all about the reality of their sufferings and to ask for their help. Many souls from Purgatory would often visit Padre Pio to ask him to pray and offer Masses for them.The souls in Purgatory cannot help themselves. They are dependent upon our prayers and sacrifices. Of greatest assistance, is when we have a Mass offered for them (the Offering of the Sacrificial Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ--which can be done by anyone, at any local Catholic Church. You do not have to be a Catholic in order to have a Mass offered for a loved one.) Also of greatest relief to the poor souls detained in Purgatory is to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy or the Rosary, or to offer other personal prayers and sacrifices on their behalf.
From many apparitions throughout history, the poor souls have revealed to us that there are different levels of Purgatory---including that which is closest to hell, and that which is just shy of entering into Heaven. It's a place of immense suffering, and for the sake of our loved ones, we would be wise to educate ourselves about the truth of Purgatory. Once we understand this reality, the more we will be able to help those who suffer there. If we just "assume" everyone goes straight to Heaven when they die, we do a great disservice to the poor souls who are in such need of our assistance. The following stories document some of the teachings about Purgatory from apparitions over the centuries. As we read about what these poor souls have revealed to us, let us remember that no matter how difficult life may seem to us here on earth, we still have the opportunity each day to offer our prayers, sufferings and sacrifices (our Crosses) to appease the Divine Justice of those already in Purgatory, and to repair for our own sins, as well---thus, lessening our need for a long Purgatory. In a sense, we can "do our Purgatory now" by little acts of Holy Love toward one another---such as, by praying for the souls in Purgatory, and by accepting God's Will over our own throughout the day. Each day is an opportunity for us in this regard---in fact, it holds many opportunities to help ourselves and the suffering souls in Purgatory (which could include some of our own ancestors and departed friends).

When the Virgin Mary appeared to the Fatima children on 5/13/1917, the
children asked her about a young 18-20 year old girl by the name of Amelia,
who had recently died. Our Lady replied:
"She will be in Purgatory....until the end of the world.
It is very humbling for us to consider that a girl so young should receive such a harsh punishment in Purgatory.

Jesus gave St. Faustina the following message about those who suffer in Purgatory. (This insight is part of the Novena that proceeds the Feast of Divine Mercy-Day 8).
#1226 - "Today bring to Me the souls who are in the prison of Purgatory, and immerse them in the abyss of My Mercy. Let the torrents of My Blood cool down their scorching flames. All these souls are greatly loved by Me. They are making retribution to My Justice. It is in your power to bring them relief. Draw all the indulgences from the treasury of My Church and offer them on their behalf. Oh, if you only knew the torments they suffer, you would continually offer for them the alms of the spirit and pay off their debt to My Justice."

From the Book: "Purgatory--Explained by the Lives and Legends of the Saints" - by Father F. X. Schouppe, S. J. From the experiences of St. Lidwina who died in 1433. Pgs. 23-24 "....An unfortunate sinner, entangled in the corruptions of the world, was finally converted. Thanks to the prayers and urgent exhortations of Lidwina he made a sincere confession of all his sins and received absolution, but had little time to practice penance, for shortly after, he died of the plague."
"The saint offered up many prayers and sufferings for his soul; and some time afterwards, having been taken by her angel guardian into Purgatory, she desired to know if he was still there and in what condition. 'He is there,' said her angel, 'and he suffers much. Would you be willing to endure some pain in order to diminish his?' 'Certainly,' she replied, 'I am ready to suffer anything to assist him.' Instantly her angel conducted her into a place of frightful torture. 'Is this, then, Hell, my brother?' asked the holy maiden seized with horror. 'No sister...but this part of Purgatory is bordering upon Hell.' Looking around on all sides, she saw what resembled an immense prison, surrounded with walls of a prodigious height, the blackness of which, together with the monstrous stones, inspired her with horror. Approaching this dismal enclosure, she heard a confused noise of lamenting voices, cries of fury, chains, instruments of torture, violent blows which the executioners discharged upon their victims...."
" '....Do you recognize that voice?' said the angel to her. 'Alas! yes,' answered the servant of God. 'Do you desire to see that soul?'...he called him by his name; and immediately (she) saw appear at the mouth of the pit a spirit all on fire, resembling incandescent metal, which said to her in a voice scarcely audible, 'O Lidwina, servant of God, who will give me to contemplate the face of the Most High?' " (He was begging her for her prayers that he may ascend from the pit to behold the face of God.) A few days later, the angel of the man she saw and prayed for in Purgatory appeared to St. Lidwina to inform her that he "had left the pit and passed into the ordinary Purgatory."

5/26/07 "I am Alanus. Jesus sends me to relate to you some knowledge of Purgatory. All praise be to Jesus."
"The soul, once freed from the body, undergoes its final judgment. This judgment is based on the depth of Holy Love in the heart at the last breath. It is this decision to live in Holy Love or not, that the soul makes throughout his life, which determines his particular place in Heaven, Purgatory or Hell. If the soul consistently chooses Holy and Divine Love, he would have a particularly high place in Heaven. If the soul tried to live in Holy Love, but had faults in Holy Love he was unable to conquer, then he would find himself in Purgatory. So you see, it is each person who chooses his own afterlife according to free will."
"As you know, Purgatory has many levels. The deepest level--the one farthest from God--is reserved for those souls who converted at the last moment of life or for those who had repented of grave sins, but had never atoned for them. The greatest trial in all of Purgatory is being apart from God. These souls, in the deepest part of Purgatory, feel this loss most keenly because they are the farthest from God. So you see, the depth of love in your heart in this life affects you throughout eternity. Each soul's eternal reward is based on the Holy Love in his heart throughout his lifetime. I will take you to the edge of Purgatory soon."

5/28/07 - Alanus (the visionary's angel) comes to me. He says: "All praise be to Jesus. Today in your country the citizens commemorate the dead by visiting cemeteries and decorating grave sites with flags, flowers and so forth. But what I have come to show you should change the outlook of all people concerning the hereafter if they enter into this vision of Purgatory with sincere hearts."He then leads me, mystically, along a path which seems to be covered in brambles. We go up a little incline and he asks me to stand beside him on the edge of a rocky cliff. He motions with a sweep of his arm, and below us is a big canyon. At one end are great flames. It looks like people in silhouettes bobbing up and down in these flames. There are loud cries for mercy and shouts of pain, but it does not alleviate the suffering.
Alanus says, "These are the souls in greatest need of prayer and sacrifice. This is the lowest part of Purgatory--the part closest to Hell itself. Many suffer here, for no one prays for them. They were regarded as 'good'--some even 'holy'--in their lifetime, but it was all a facade. Many priests are among these poor souls, for they were not faithful to the precepts of the Church."
"There are those who lied about others, and destroyed their reputations. These are them." He shows me souls who are having molten lead poured down their throats. It burns holes through their necks but does not stop. On a ledge around this fire are many angels--more than I can count. Alanus says, "These are the guardian angels of those poor souls being purified at this level. Through all of this suffering, the souls' greatest trial is separation from God."
I saw souls who seemed to have their flesh melting away. This, too, was unending. Alanus said, "These are the ones who were guilty of sins of the flesh."
We moved on to view the next level. There seemed to be something like water poured down on the fire so the flames were smaller--not as intense. Alanus said, "Blood and water from the Side of Jesus continually flows upon the souls on this level." The souls were suffering, but all their suffering seemed more alike, and for some reason, the souls seemed more united. They had their hands raised towards an opening. They seemed to be begging for mercy. Alanus told me, "They suffer intensely for not being in God's Presence."We moved on to what seemed like a much better area. These souls looked more like people, but they were gray. Alanus said, "These are the ones closest to Paradise. They are almost completely purified. They need maybe one Mass, or one rosary; maybe one Hail Mary to enter eternal joy."
"So you see, decorating graves is not what souls, long deceased, cry out for. Many spend long centuries in Purgatory, for their loved ones think they are in Heaven. If you pray and sacrifice for these holy souls, they will assist you now and at the hour of your death. Make it known."

10/22/10 - (A Poor Soul) "All praise be to Jesus - Glory to Mary, Queen and Mother. I come as I have been sent - to dictate to you messages about Purgatory. Do not reject this grace."
(The visionary, Maureen: I see an old woman in charred clothing and I smell smoke. She has appeared many times before but has never spoken - so I ignored her.)
Poor Soul: "Purgatory should not be feared, daughter, but seen as a grace. But at the same time, souls should do all in their power to avoid imprisonment here. This is a place of reparation for sins that are forgiven but not atoned for. At the same time, it is a place of preparation for entrance to eternal joy. Here, the soul is perfected if he has not been perfected in the world. The soul is made beautiful in the Eyes of God."
"Because this is a place which prepares the soul to be in God's Presence, it is also a place of separation from God, and this is the greatest suffering of all. The soul, at his last judgment, is in God's Presence, and even temporary separation from this Perfect, Eternal Love is agonizing."
"The prayer that moves the souls most rapidly through Purgatory is the Holy Mass; next is the Holy Rosary. No one needs to believe in Purgatory to be assigned there. Purgatory is a reality - does exist - and disbelief is not an avoidance of this place of reparation. Disbelief, however, if it is dictated by your tenets of faith, can be a reason for a longer stay. 10/23/10 - (A Poor Soul) (This is the same poor soul that appeared with Jesus yesterday.) The poor soul says: "Praise be to Jesus. There are basically three forms of suffering in the regions of Purgatory. One is physical, and can be as intense as the fires of Hell. That is the lowest region. Along with this physical fire is the feeling of extreme desolation or loneliness. As the soul moves to the next level, he does not suffer so much physically as he suffers this emotional abandonment, and along with it, the spiritual suffering of being separated from God. The level of Purgatory closest to Heaven is the region where the only suffering is the longing to be united with The Eternal Now - The Eternal Good. This longing is intense."
"The souls in Purgatory suffer also from not being aware of the passage of time or how long they will be where they are. When they are prayed for or sacrifices are offered for them, their sufferings are somewhat relieved, and they are allowed some insight as to their tenure in any one circumstance. This is why prayer and sacrifice are so important to us - the poor souls."
Note: Later this evening Our Lady visited Maureen and said: "You're asking about the name of the poor soul who visits; her name is Rachel."

I have been allowed to return to you today to plead the cause of so many millions still in the bowels of Purgatory that no one prays for.""You can never offer too many prayers for the poor souls. Purgatory is densely populated. The greatest suffering of these souls is to be separated from the Trinity Whom they now realize to be the One Most Worthy of their affection and ardor. It is much like being in prison, longing to go home, but unable to do so."
"The poor souls, whose release you acquire, are ever grateful and pray for your intentions without ceasing. So, you see, we are good friends, both in life and in death. Though the benefits of your generosity towards the poor souls is most often unrecognizable, I tell you, these fruits are all around you. Learn to call upon the suffering souls and souls you assisted in being delivered from Purgatory, as you would your guardian angel."
"These souls can help expedite situations ensnared by Satan's confusion. They can bring the light of truth into darkness. They can encourage in righteousness those tempted to sin. There are thousands, even millions, still imprisoned there for the same reason. They, like me, were given the grace to recognize their errors but did not take the call to conversion to heart. Their words and actions led to the loss of many souls. Please let the people know that examination of conscience is very important. Thank you!"

10/23/10 - (A Poor Soul) - (Jesus comes with the poor soul that was here yesterday.) He says: "I am your Jesus, born Incarnate. The reason this soul is coming here and relaying messages about Purgatory is to help souls in the world today to realize that the free will choices they make in every present moment affect their eternity. If souls would understand this in their hearts, there would be no personal agendas contrary to My Father's Divine Will."
(Now Jesus leaves and the poor soul begins to speak.) She says: "Praise be to Jesus. Daughter, every soul in Purgatory is there due to imperfections in Holy Love. This is because it is flaws in Holy Love that result in every sin - from the small sin of impatience to murder or sins of the flesh. The more the heart resembles Holy Love at his judgment, the shorter his stay in Purgatory."
"Many, many are here simply because they tried to please themselves or man rather than God. They suffer desolation. Depending upon their crimes against Holy Love, they are assigned to a certain level of reparation in Purgatory. Poor souls can no longer help themselves. They cannot advance to a more comfortable level by themselves, nor can they shorten their time. They are completely dependent upon the Church Militant - on their good will."
"Sins of the flesh and sins of the tongue have their own unique levels of reparation. More souls are in Purgatory today for detraction and calumny than any other crime. If you know someone that has fallen in such a way, pray for his conversion. I will continue to come to you as long as it is God's Will."
****PARTICIPATE IN DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY, AND ITS 9-DAY PREPARATION:
Once a year, on Divine Mercy Sunday, we have a great opportunity, through the Mercy of Christ, to obtain pardon for the punishment we deserve due to our sins. Jesus gave great promises to us through St. Faustina as an invitation to obtain complete forgiveness of sins and the punishment due to us for our sins. Although it involves Catholic Sacraments, non-Catholics should participate in this great devotion as much as possible, with all sincerity of heart. Jesus promised:
#699 "...I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender Mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My Mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My Mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity.....The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy."

Preparations for Divine Mercy Sunday (the 1st Sunday after Easter) involves praying for different groups of people for 9 days before the Feast of Divine Mercy. (The Novena begins on Good Friday.) Our prayers are an "Act of Mercy" for all of those we pray for during the Novena. Jesus uses our prayers to have Mercy on them, and He also has Mercy on us.

5/20/07 - The visionary visited Heaven - "I am your Angel--Alanus. I come in praise of Jesus. Jesus desires that I take you to the edge of eternity so that you can witness with accuracy all that lies in the next world for souls."All at once, mystically, I seemed to be standing on the edge of Paradise. The angel said, "See, it is all peace here for every heart in pure love. You don't need to think about sin in this moment or the next. There is no sin. There is no present or moments ahead. It seemed I was seeing colors I never knew existed--beautiful blends of color in great richness. Alanus then said, "Any flower you wish to smell--just think of it and you will smell it. (I thought of sweet peas.) Any food you desire, the desire will be fulfilled without eating. When you think of Jesus, He will be next to you; the same with the Holy Virgin. There is no space here--everything is everywhere--a concept the soul cannot grasp in the world. If you praise God once, the praise resonates throughout Heaven for all eternity. This is a difficult concept for you, I know. This can best be defined as this--there is no past, present or future in Heaven. All of these come together in the Eternal Now. All is embraced and part of the Divine Will of the Eternal Father Who is the Author of All Good.""The Heart of God the Father is Heaven itself. No one enters outside of His Adorable Divine Will, for in Heaven all is conformed to His Will. So you see, Heaven is the perfection of the Divine Will. The ways that the soul opposes the Eternal Will of God are faults, imperfections and sins that must be atoned for, and burned away before he can enter Paradise."

We may not see such signs whenever we pray, and to be honest, we really shouldn't base our faith on "looking for signs" in order to believe, but we must know that every prayer effort and every commitment to humbly serve our Lord God in Truth is very pleasing to Him. The blessings He bestows are abundant, and we may not see their fruits until we stand before Him on our last day.
